Wife inspired by husband’s military service, writes book

Linda Stai has enjoyed writing since she was a child. She started out writing dramas, and published three books, including “The Rose Journal,” “The Primrose Papers,” and her most recent publication, “Remember Me: Vietnam War Veterans Share Their Stories.” Stai is now retired and has used her writing talent to honor men who have served our country.

Stai and her husband, Gary, reside in the Buffalo area, between Buffalo and Monticello. The couple have been married for 39 years. Stai has two children from a previous relationship, and she and Gary have one child together. They have a total of eight grandchildren.

Linda and Gary lived in Brooklyn Park for many years, where they raised their children. They would travel cross-country with the kids in a camper. They visited Canada in the camper as well.

Gary is a retired electrician and served in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War was a conflict that occurred from 1955 to 1975. Linda would go with Gary to his Vietnam Veteran reunions. She heard their stories and experiences and was inspired. “I wanted to honor these men. They are the true heroes,” she shared.

Stai’s book is educational and corrects misconceptions about the Vietnam War and those who served in the military during that time. It also sheds light on service members being mistreated when they returned home. “You heard a lot of bad things about what people did in the Vietnam War, but that’s not these guys,” Stai illustrated.

She shares the bravery of these men who served their country. “They stepped up to the plate,” she said. She has enjoyed having the opportunity to share their stories and getting to know the men themselves.

She shared that the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) has learned a lot from Vietnam Veterans in regards to PTSD and other difficulties after returning home from battle. What they learned from Vietnam Veterans has helped better treat and take care of those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan in the 2000s.

Through the process, Stai has learned to value each person’s experiences. “Each person has a life story,” she stated. She spoke about God’s love for all of us, and she believes God puts people in your life for a purpose.

The men whose stories are included in her book have thanked her and told her that the book and talking about their experiences have helped with their healing process.

Linda will be hosting a book signing on Wednesday, October 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the Buffalo Community Center (206 Central Avenue, Buffalo.) Her books are also available on Amazon by searching her name as the author “Linda Ruth Stai.”
