Carl Carlson, 93

Carl Elroy Carlson, 93, of Cokato Passed away at Cokato Manor on August 19, 2019. 

Memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 30, at Albion Evangelical Free Church. Visitation and lunch begins at 11 a.m. at the church on Friday. Interment to take place at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Cemetery.

Carl Elroy Carlson was born on the family farm in Cokato Township on August 22, 1925 to Frank and Alvina (Peterson) Carlson. He grew up on the farm and graduated from Annandale High School in 1943. After high school, he worked on the Ruge farm in Maple Lake.

He entered the United States Navy on August 19, 1943. He served as a radioman during World War II on ships stationed in the Philippines.

On February 24, 1951, Carl married Norma Larson at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church. Their 68 years together were blessed with the birth of five children. Carl farmed, but also had a variety of jobs, including driving a milk truck, feed salesman, factory worker at Minnesota Rubber, and, in retirement, worked at Cub Foods. He was a devout Christian, man of integrity, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Carl passed away at Cokato Manor on August 19, 2019. He had reached the age of 93 years, 11 months, and 27 days.

Carl’s survivors include: his wife, Norma; their children, Barbara (Richard) Barsness, Joan (Stephen) Schesvold, Steven (Jane) Carlson, Kathleen (Scott) Banta, and Janet (Jon) Saksa; grandchildren, Betsey Alessi, Amy (Jeff) Boyle, Sarah (Evan) Anderson, Mark (Amanda) Barsness, Elizabeth (Rob) Driftmeyer, Jenny Schesvold, Jordan Schesvold, Stephanie (Luther) Kemp, Elizabeth (Kalin) Kauppila, Andrew (Christine) Banta, Jacob (Rachel) Banta, Lucas (Lisa) Banta, Molly (Shaphan) Kirkpatrick, Heidi (Jacob) Nelson, Shelly (Caleb) Spitler, and Brian (Abi) Saksa; and 26 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his sister, Genevieve Larson, brother-in-law, Donald Carlson, and sisters-in-law, Joan (Beeb) Larson and LuAnn Larson.

Carl was preceded in death by: his parents, Frank and Alvina Carlson; parents-in-law Emil and Edith Larson; siblings and spouses Andrew (Evelyn), Waldor (Millie), Lawrence (Billie; Florence), Richard, Ellsworth (Edna), and Verona (Bernie) Broman; siblings-in-law Lorraine Carlson, Gordon Larson, Philip Larson, and Daniel Larson; and grandson-in-law Mario Alessi.

 


Robert Klatt, 82

Robert Leo Klatt, 82, of Monticello died Friday, August, 23 at his home. A native of Monticello, he was born on August 12, 1937 to the late Florence and Leo Klatt.

He was preceded in death by: his brothers, Delbert, Gordon, Roger; sister, Hattie Arnold; brothers- in-law, Warren Snodgrass and George Liefert; and son-in-law, Steve Samuelson.

He married the love of his life, Joan Iten on November 26, 1960. They were married for 58 years. He was a lifetime member of St. Peters Lutheran Church where he was baptized, confirmed in 1951 and was married there. He was an active trustee and an active member of the building committee when they added the narthex.

His work history before retirement included farming, since he was eleven, owner of Klatt and Kopff Construction, production worker at Electro Industries and grilled many pork chops for various events for the Pork Producers.

He is survived by: his wife, Joan; his three children: Deb Samuelson, Mike (Theresa) Klatt, and Shirley (Dave) Hayes. He loved his seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren dearly. Also survived by siblings, Verna Snodgrass, Mabel Liefert and Larry (Diane) Klatt.

Visitation was Sunday, August 25, from 4-8 p.m. at Peterson Grimsmo Chapel in Monticello. Funeral service was held on Monday, August 26 at 11 a.m. at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Monticello, with one hour of visitation prior.  Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in Monticello.

 

 


Catherine Poirier, 64

Catherine “Cathy” Mary Poirier was born July 16, 1955, in Waverly, the daughter of Arthur Poirier and Rosalie (Salonek) Henning. Her last residence was at Hidden Cove apartments in Buffalo. She spent many years in Chaska, as well.

Cathy was a graduate of Buffalo High School. Following high school, she attended Hennepin Technical College.  She was last employed at Supervalu at their region office in Hopkins.

She spent many hours doing yarn crafts like crocheting and knitting; she also enjoyed sewing and playing with her cat, Cosmo. Cathy grew roses and tomatoes on her deck. She usually attended a girl’s night out with her friends from work once a month. She cherished spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her grandparents, she is preceded in death by: her father, Arthur; step-father, Marvin Henning, and her sister-in-law, Jeannie (Pierson) Poirier.

She is survived by: her mother, Rosalie; siblings, Carol (Gary) Dietel, Gary Poirier, Clayton (Cathy Segler) Poirier, Donald (Trang Hoang) Poirier, Stephen Poirier, Donna (Nick) Dietel, Dennis Poirier, and Charles (Barb Moore) Poirier; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, September 4, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. Inurnment to follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Ronald Root, 85

Ronald Dennis Root, age 85, (Ron “Ronnie”), of Buffalo, passed away on August 18, 2019 at Senior Living, Hutchinson.

Ronnie was preceded in death by Mary Lou Shirley (Opsal) Root.

Ronnie served in the U.S. Army, fought in the Korean war, Trumpet player at Nye’s Polonaise for many years, played trumpet with the Country Diamonds, and played TAPS for Ft. Snelling and local V.F.W’s.

He is survived by his children, Kathy Root, Mark Opsal, Paula Hancer (Burke), Jerry Root, Holly Root, Tracy Berner; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother/sister in-law Dan Opsal (Linda).

Interment service was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Tuesday, August 27, 2019.

 

 

 


Thomas Sicora, 90

Thomas Sicora, age 90, of Buffalo, passed away on August 21, 2019.

He was born on February 7, 1929.

Funeral Service will take place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 300 1st Avenue NW, Buffalo, on Saturday, September 7, at 11:00 a.m.

Walter Wenz, 93

Walter Wallace Wenz, age 93 of Buffalo, and Akaska, SD passed away on August 21, 2019.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; brother, Wayne; son, Bryan; and granddaughter, Leah.

Walt is survived by: his wife, Wendy; children, Dale, Alan, Wayne, Lynae and Cara; grandchildren, great-grandchildren; also other relatives and friends. 

Services to be held at a later date.
