Joyce Edwards, 92

In the early morning of October 21, 2021, Joyce Anita Edwards passed away peacefully in her home.

Joyce was born on February 18, 1929, to Peter and Mary Osness in Minneapolis, MN. The family moved out to “the farm” in Dassel, MN, where Joyce grew up. She attended school there, where her love of reading began and graduated in 1946.

After hitchhiking across the US in her teens, Joyce began her greatest adventure by eloping (on the first date!) with John Edwards. They went on to have four children and were married for 43 years before John passed away.

Joyce was a wonderful mother and wife; her caring nature and outgoing personality extended into her work at Buffalo schools and the Buffalo library. She was an active member of the community throughout her life and her social calendar was full of bridge, supper clubs, and volunteering. After her retirement, Joyce sold pull-tabs at the Mill Creek Inn to pay for her international travels that brought her to all seven continents and kept her busy until her late 80s.

She had friends all over the world and everyone could look forward to her annual Christmas card and poem.

She felt humble and grateful to God for a life so full of blessings and love. She would often say, “Isn’t it amazing, coming from a depression farm of the thirties, to have experienced such a wonderful life, even with the grief and fears that connect most families?”

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; and her five siblings.

She is survived by her children, Michael (Suzanne), Robert (Lucinda), Jeffrey (Robin), and Laura (Kevin). She is also survived by her nine grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and four great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life is planned at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo, MN, on Tuesday, November 2, with visitation beginning at 10:00 AM, a service at 11:00 AM, and lunch immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to a charity of your choice in her honor.

Lorraine Melcher, 94

Lorraine Yvonne Bigelow Melcher was born on July 1, 1927, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was third of seven children of her parents, Lucille and Laurence Bigelow. They lived at 55th and Lyndale in Minneapolis, walking distance to Annunciation Grade School, which Lorraine and her siblings attended. After a year of public high school, Lorraine chose to attend Holy Angels High School in Richfield, working as a grocery clerk to help pay tuition, paving the way for her younger sisters.

Lorraine attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology. She met a tall, young mechanical engineer, Bob Melcher, in the winter of her junior year. She thought he didn’t like her company because she didn’t hear from him for weeks after their first meeting. On Easter Sunday, he phoned the Bigelow house and asked Lorraine out again, explaining that he hadn’t called in the interim because he didn’t think she was the kind of girl who dates during Lent. During her senior year, Bob proposed marriage. Lorraine said, “Yes, but first, I need to complete my St. Catherine’s degree.” A week after graduation, they were married, June 11, 1949.

In 1950, while living in an apartment, their first child, John, was born. Soon afterward, they moved to their home on Hankerson Avenue in Edina. There, their family grew, with Kathy, Mary Kay, Greg, Anne, Steve, and Jim. Meanwhile, Bob and his friends, Wayne Riethmiller, Ralph Eisele and Clarence Berthiaume, founded Tri-State Drilling Company in Hamel. Lorraine and Bob decided to move the family to a larger house in a smaller town, Buffalo, where Charlie and Rich were born. That completed the family – nine children. Lorraine and Bob passed onto these nine children the values of faith in God, education, family, and generosity to others.

Surrounded by her children, Lorraine was a woman of projects– for the family, for the church, for the community, for the world. She did many large and small things with great love. Lorraine touched the lives of many children and families by serving on the school board. She wove her value of faith into years of teaching religion to young people. She opened her home to gatherings of her children’s friends, many of whom still recall these gatherings fondly. At St. Francis Parish, Lorraine started a ministry of making bedrolls for homeless people in Minneapolis. She gathered toiletries to stuff into each bedroll with warm socks, undershirts, and, in the winter, mittens and hats. Her constant question was, “who can I share this with?”  Whether it was clothing from a 2nd hand store, recordings of retreats and workshops, or spiritual books she had discovered, Lorraine always asked the question “Who can I share this with?” Lorraine’s trademark smile and lively eyes confirmed the depth of her love, and her ability to laugh at herself.

Lorraine was born into eternal life on October 18, 2021.

She is survived by her children, John (Liz) Melcher, Kathy (Randy) Mummert, Mary Kay Mans, Greg (Kelle) Melcher, Anne (Jim Dyrud) Leuthner, Steve (Mary) Melcher, Jim (Ruth) Melcher, Charlie (Karen) Melcher, Rich (Sandra) Melcher; twenty grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary and Rose, and many nieces and nephews.

Lorraine was preceded in death on Easter 2019 by Bob, her husband of 69 years; her parents, Larry and Lucille; her brothers, Donald and John; her sisters, Pat and Ann; her son-in-law, Tom (Mary Kay); and grandson, Jesse.

Visitation was held Monday, October 25, 2021, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM, at The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, MN. Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at 11:00 AM, with visitation one hour prior at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Buffalo, MN. Interment followed at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Buffalo, MN.

Mark Miller, 61

Mark Miller passed away at his home on October 17, in Howard Lake, MN, at the age of 61, after a five-month battle with brain cancer.

Mark is survived by his wife, Gayle (Stocke) Miller, of Howard Lake, MN; daughters, Nathalie (Tayt) Rinehardt, Andrea Miller, Melisa (Matt) Hill; grandsons, Toren and Leif Rinehardt, Landon and Bodie Hill; siblings, Julie Miller, Jon (Pam) Miller, Sara (Tony) Graham; and many other friends and family.

He was preceded in death by infant daughter, Christine Miller; his parents, Darrell and Charlotte Miller.

Mark was born on Aug 11, 1960, in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from Buffalo High School and went on to receive a degree in Accounting and Computer Science from the University of North Dakota in 1982. He and Gayle married, welcomed their three daughters, and settled in Buffalo. Mark’s career included working for Deloitte & Touche and Computer Network Technology. For the past 25 years, he held his most-fulfilling role at Room and Board where he thoroughly enjoyed his work with many talented colleagues.

Mark will be remembered for his wit and quiet, calm nature. His intelligence and thoughtfulness. He loved the outdoors and caring for his property at “The Ranch,” mowing and meticulously landscaping and gardening. His career allowed him to travel, and he would return with the latest restaurant recommendations from across the United States but was just as happy with a hamburger at the local Legion.

His interests varied from attending auctions so he could add to his collection of vintage advertising signs, reading (and Tweeting) on the latest news, giving gator rides to his grandsons, to not so begrudgingly allowing his two labs, Marlee and Libby, to live inside the house. He will be missed greatly. In an email he sent shortly after his diagnosis, he encouraged people “not to ignore simple, small changes in your health,” as he hoped this advice would help others.

A private gathering of his friends and family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the M. Darrell Miller Family Education Scholarship c/o of the 877 Foundation at PO Box 274, Buffalo, MN, 55313.

The family would like to thank the medical staff at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, particularly the Givens Brain Tumor Center, Allina Home Care and Hospice Services, and the wonderful caregivers with Providers Management who made it possible to fulfill Mark’s wishes to spend his last days at his home.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo is serving the family. Online condolences may be made to www.thepetersonchapel.com.
