Bernice Aydt, 99
Bernice Gladys (Weber) (Babler) Aydt, age 99 years, three months, and six days, passed away on March 18, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Home in Sauk Rapids, MN.
She was born on December 12, 1923, in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Robert Andrew and Laura Luella (Bursch) Weber.
Bernice attended one-room schools through the eighth grade in the Corcoran and Hassan area. She attended and graduated Handke High School in Elk River, MN. She then attended Minneapolis School of Business for four months, until she could no longer afford it.
She lived on a small farm in Hassan, MN, while attending high school. During this time she assisted the woman of the household, who was in poor health. Before catching the school bus, her duties were to start breakfast on the wood burning cook stove, which usually consisted of coffee, hot cereal, fruit, and toast (she had to get the fire started before preparing breakfast!). She was responsible for paying her own bus fare and book rent, so she worked in the library during the noon hour during her freshman year in high school. During the remaining years in high school, she worked in the principal’s office during her study hour. After school hours, she returned to the farm where she pumped and carried in water for the night and next day, she filled the wood box, assisted with the preparation of supper, washed and dried the dishes, and cleaned the kitchen. Then, she worked on homework for the next day. After graduation from high school, she attended the business school in Minneapolis, at which time she lived with a family with two small children. She assisted with the daily chores, along with Saturday’s laundry and cleaning the house.
Bernice enjoyed reading, cooking, and baking. She was a devoted member of the Hanover United Methodist Church where she led an adult Sunday School class for many years, was the church treasurer, and was the Historical Cabinet Assistant.
Bernice Weber and Norbert Babler were married on September 27, 1945, upon his return from WWII. They were married only nine years when he passed away from a major heart attack. After his passing, she moved to St. Michael and began working at Security State Bank of St. Michael where she worked for 28 years until her retirement.
In 1962 she married Ansel Aydt, a 50-year-old bachelor, from St. Michael. Ansel passed away in 1999 from Parkinson’s Disease.
